Dear Mr. and Mrs. Watanabe:

I extend my heartfelt sympathy to you in your bereavement. I was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of your beloved daughter, Masumi, and share my warmest aloha with you in this time of unconsolable grief. May time heal the grievous hurt that your family suffered.

We often wonder why someone we love so dearly should be taken from us at such a young age, but fate moves in infinite ways. While I realize that no words can ease the pain of losing one's child, I pray that your faith will grant you an acceptable meaning to Masumi's early departure so that you may look with new hope into the future. I hope that the joy and love that Masumi gave you will lessen your sense of loss.

I join the Watanabe family in bidding Masumi Watanabe a last fond aloha. May she rest in peace.

Aloha pumehana,

Daniel K. Akaka
U.S. Senator
